Hawaii Interior Design

One of my favorite Hawaii interior design projects was a home at the Lau’ Eki Estates at Hualalai.
The scope was to fully furnish and accessorize the 5, 300 sq. ft. home. The color palette had to be mainly neutral with soft accents that would please a wide variety of potential homeowners. We selected soft golden tones and rusty oranges for the accents. We also had to choose art and accessories that were pleasing to a wide audience, so we used Asian architectural artifacts and antiques.

The most unique aspect of this house is that it really represents indoor/ outdoor living at its best. None of the spaces are connected by interior hallways. You have to go outside to get from one room to the next, and the walkways are surrounded by water. Large overhangs protect you from the elements.

We recently completed a full scale renovation of a home in Mauna Kea. We were hired on early in the project so we had the opportunity to redesign the spaces prior to selecting the finishes and furnishings. We converted it from two bedrooms to three while staying inside the original exterior walls. It was important to us to use materials and artist that were local to the island when possible to create a Hawaii interior design. An example of this is the dining room table. It was made on island by Mathew D’Avella, a master woodworker. The color palette was neutral with accents of greens and blues compliment the ocean views that surround the property. Many of the dark wood ceilings were removed as they dated the home and weighed down the rooms. We also added elements of indirect energy efficient lighting to brighten the home while being environmentally responsible.
