Despite the warm, classic style of his house, this world traveler wanted a sleek, minimalist kitchen and batch. Stainless stell and piano-finished cabinet doors achieved the contemporary look, but the challenge of a seamless transition from the traditional remainder of the house persisted. Designer Claire Ownby achieved that progression, combining such textures as high-gloss lacquer, maple wood, granite and stone flooring. This unconventional fusion of materials and surfaces gave the more modern rooms a softer feel.
